Spicing Up My Morning Coffee

Sometimes usually I have disastrous kitchen accidents, but other times I have happy ones. This particular accident falls into the latter category. Absentmindedly pouring chai concentrate into my coffee instead of milk one day turned out to be a wonderful mistake. In the past I have been known to order a "dirty chai" (or extra dirty if I'm feeling frisky!) from coffee shops, but for some reason had never considered doing it at home. I rather like the way spices up (pun intended) my daily cup o' joe.

I think it's best when you add shots of espresso to a chai latte, but just splashing some milk (love it with vanilla almond milk!) and chai concentrate to a cup of coffee does the trick as well.

Also, personal preference, but I will only drink Oregon Chai. Say no to Tazo. Blech.

weekend.

We had to go to the dreaded DMV on Saturday (again) so we tried to make the rest of the weekend less awful with some retail therapy, our favorite foods and a lovely sunset. We are loving having more routine in our lives. Now that Lance's job has more normal hours, things are a little more predictable and a bit less of a whirlwind. This consistency has certainly lowered my stress levels.

Speaking of Lance and his new job, I am one super proud wifey. He absolutely loves it! I feel like I'm married to an adult or something. And it might (just maybe) make me wonder if I should be trading in my many jobs for one normal job. Maybe, but probably not. I'm just not sure how thrilled I would be with the monotony of your typical day job. I kind of like having different things that I do every day hour, which might sound contrary to my love of consistency, but really, I thrive in controlled and consistent chaos. I'd be bored without it.

without music, life would be a mistake

Wednesday by Kylee Noelle on Grooveshark

I'm working from home today and can't stand the silence so I made a little playlist to get me through the day. I thought I'd share it so you could listen along! Happy hump day!

5 tips for better Instagram Photos

I've proclaimed my love of instagram many times. Lately I have been getting more into it and have been receiving quite a few questions about how I make my pictures look the way I do. I know a lot of people don't want to give away their "secrets", but I'm not greedy so I thought I'd do a little post with some tips I've been learning for making a more beautiful feed.

1. Lighting
This is important. Bad lighting usually equals a bad photo. So get closer to a window or go outside. Don't take pictures in your basement (or in my case, not in the depths of my dreary apartment.)

2. Staging
Look before and check after you snap a photo. Many times I have taken a picture and not even noticed a stray cord or pile of papers in the corner until it's too late to go back and change it. Clear anything from the area that you don't want distracting from what your photographing. Also, consider your backdrop. If you moved that vase of flowers over a few inches would there be something more pleasing behind it? If you walked to another room would that picture of your feet have prettier floors beneath them?

3. Take pictures of things that are already beautiful or interesting.
Is it worth looking at or sharing? As much as I may be enjoying my bowl of split pea soup, if my goal is to take beautiful pictures, I might not want to Instagram it. And also, this may just be a personal preference, but I don't generally desire to see pictures of your gnarly toes. Yep, I said it. I'm tired of seeing people's bare feet in my feed. If I've unfollowed you this is probably why. Put some cute shoes on (preferably that cover your toes) and snap away.

4. Take several shots.
Taking several shots (with slight variations) gives you options and ensures that you won't end up with only one shot and realize later that it was blurry. Usually I will take a bunch and when I go back through them there is always one that stands out over the others and I'm glad I had more than one to choose from!

5. Use other editing apps.
This has been where I have had the most fun lately. Only recently have I discovered the joys of utilizing other apps before I upload a photo to Instagram. It has changed everything. My two favorite and most frequently used iPhone photography apps are Snapseed and VSCO cam. Snapseed is helpful for fine tuning and VSCO cam is good for more natural/subtle filter effects. I have no special formula for you. Just play around with different filters or lighting effects until you get just the look you're going for, save it to your photo album and upload into Instagram! You can even still add an Instagram filter on top.

Four.

"There is no more lovely, friendly and charming relationship, communion or company than a good marriage." -Martin Luther

Four (really?!) years ago today I married my best friend. Sometimes I still have to pinch myself to make  sure it's real. I love this man through both the good and the bad and still promise (as strongly today as on our wedding day) that I always will.

Love you forever and always LP!

Random thoughts because my feelings matter to you.

1. I can totally quit coffee. Anytime. Honest. I just don't want to right now, that's all.

2. Husband– I love that you somehow rope me in to watching British Top Gear with you every night. But not really. Okay, it might be growing on me just a little bit. But just because I may look up from my iphone for longer than 2 seconds sometimes when a fancy pants car makes an appearance does not mean we will be purchasing that car. Sorry for any mixed signals my attentiveness may have caused.

3. It's normal to dishes once a week, right? Sorry I'm not sorry.

4. Along those lines, I would just like to say that I think it's perfectly acceptable to just buy new socks as you need them.

5. I have had the MOST annoying tickle in my chest for the past two weeks now. Every five seconds or so it causes an absolutely pathetic and unproductive little cough. When will it end???

6. You wanna know something I'm not mad about? Paid days off. Not mad one bit.

7.  This site is hilarious. Don't worry, it's not dirty as the title would imply. If you don't get it then I'm sorry.

8. Speaking of things that make me laugh. This Twitter feed occasionally does the trick.

9. I write for this blog, where I document all the adorable items sold at Meadow Boutique here in Seattle. I seriously have to restrain myself from spending all my money there. Everything is so tempting. If you live in Seattle, you must check it out.

10. THIS. You're Welcome.

In My Makeup Bag

Today I am blogging over at Urban Anthropology about what's in my makeup bag! I even had the pleasure of meeting Natalie in real life the other day. It was my first ever blogger date (blate?). We were terrible bloggers and didn't get a picture to commemorate the event, probably because we were having such a lovely time chatting over coffee. She is simply wonderful (as is her blog!) so after checking out my post you should probably take some time to read on and get to know her!

photos from the ninety degree weekend

Happy Monday!

I've decided I'm really not a fan of anything over 80 degrees. It hit 90 this weekend and I wasn't thrilled. I'm already looking forward to fall. Bring on the pumpkin pies, scarves, boots, and crunchy leaves! I'm ready! This is probably why I've never changed my blog photo in the upper right to something more summer-esque. My heart (and opaque skin) truly belong to the fall. I guess I chose the right place to live.

Other than the "extreme" (for Seattle, anyway) heat, this weekend was pretty great. Oh, except for a trip to the DMV. So other than the heat and the DMV, it was super! On Saturday Lance and I went out and tried a new Thai place (that was actually pretty fantastic) and he caught me up on how his first week at the new job went. And on Sunday I spent the day with my family. Notice Jack's new summer haircut? So fresh, no?

Lately

I adore Instagram. It is hands down my favorite way to capture a memory and share it with others. In fact, I'm sure I annoy some people with how often I post photos sometimes. It's one of the first things I check on my phone every morning and lately I've been finding some absolutely beautiful feeds. A couple of my latest discoveries are: apieceofcake82 and kristinrogers. You simply must check them out as these ladies take some seriously gorgeous photos. Do let me know if you know of any other must-follows, because I really need another reason to be constantly hitting the refresh button.
