Salt & Straw

While we were in Portland last week we hit up Salt & Straw at their new location. We had never been, but heard great things about their inventive ice cream flavors from friends. Oh, and from some woman named Oprah. So, we knew we had to try it (plus they serve Stumptown so they're legit in my book). The lines for this place were massive so I'd say they are doing pretty well.

In true Portland style, all the ice cream is handmade with local and organic ingredients and their flavor options are pretty unique. Example? Strawberry balsamic and black pepper. Pepper. In ice cream. I know, right?

We went with friends and sampled a few flavors before we made our choices. Lance went with half Oprah's favorite flavor (olive oil) and half dandelion sorbet. I chose half pear & blue cheese and half sea salt with caramel ribbons. And the verdict was...delicious! So good, we even went back the next day with Lance's parents.

What's the most exciting ice cream flavor you've had? Does anywhere besides Portland have such places?!

We went to Salt and Straw on Friday!
The lines are aways super long.. but they move really quickly. My favorite is the banana with spicy caramel. YUM.

I recently tried some pear + blue cheese waffles, and they were delicious! But I've never heard of such an ice cream combination!
My local ice cream shop had a cicada flavor when the cicadas were out and about last summer, but I didn't try it, and they soon ran out of their key ingredient.

I can't see how those ice-creams could taste nice, but I'll take your word for it!! I'm traditional on the ice-cream front... has to be coconut :)

Whoa that sounds pretty awesome! You're brave to try the blue cheese flavor. Def need to go here next time I'm in Portland!

if only we had eclectic little ice cream shops like this in my little town. if we want ice cream we go to the grocery store or the dairy queen. it's pretty pathetic!

Olive oil? Dandelion? Sea salt and caramel? Woah girl. Just woah. This sounds too good to be true. We will definitely have to make this a regular spot when we move to Oregon next year!

DYING to try Olice Oil! Here in Ohio we have Jeni's ice cream which is very similar. It's all local, organic ingredients and she has a bunch of bizarre flavors like Queen City Cayenne (dark chocolate with cayenne pepper, Sweet Potato, Goat Cheese & Fig, etc. SO good!

I LOVE STUMPTOWN SO MUCH. My husband visited a Stumptown on the West Coast when we were dating and brought back some Stumptown beans. Best this coffee snob has ever had.

Also, that caramel flavor sounds INCREDIBLE.
